CNN.com - Rhino, goat strike unlikely bond - May 23, 2005

Cute story, the last line freaked me out. It's nightmare worthy. CNN.com - Rhino, goat strike unlikely bond - May 23, 2005: "Bizarre interspecies partnerships are rare but not unprecedented. In perhaps the most unusual case ever recorded a Kenyan lioness in the wild 'adopted' baby antelopes on at least five occasions rather than make meals of them. Bok-Bok and Clover are at least both horned herbivores. In 1998, an elephant that was abandoned by its mother became best of friends with a sheep at a South African research center."

The man in charge of destroying the rain forest in Brazil said: News: "In an interview last year he said: 'To me, a 40 per cent increase in deforestation doesn't mean anything at all, and I don't feel the slightest guilt over what we are doing here. We are talking about an area larger than Europe that has barely been touched, so there is nothing at all to get worried about.'"

Junk in the Trunk

Driving home last night from work, my husband called to tell me that he needs to go back by work b/c the storage shed had been broken into. A few minutes later, his mother called me to ask if I spoke w/ him yet. I relate how he had to go back to work b/c the storage shed has been broken into. "No, it was your storage shed." WHAT?! Yes, our storage shed had been broken into the previous night, along w/ several others. My husband went up there to report what was stolen to the police. It was depressing. Nothing was stolen. That's why it's always good to have junk in the trunk. Good to know my stuffed animals are safe.

HBO: Real Time with Bill Maher - New Rules: "And finally, New Rule: The people in America who are most in favor of the Iraq war must now go there and fight it. The Army missed its recruiting goal by 42% last month. More people joined the Michael Jackson Fan Club. " Yeah, it's funny, but will it be true? Think that the newest failure in recruitment could spun another Draft debate? Gods I hope not.

Forbes.com: Audit: $9 Billion Unaccounted for in Iraq The U.S. occupation authority in Iraq was unable to keep track of nearly $9 billion it transferred to government ministries, which lacked financial controls, security, communications and adequate staff, an inspector general has found. The U.S. officials relied on Iraqi audit agencies to account for the funds but those offices were not even functioning when the funds were transferred between October 2003 and June 2004, according to an audit by a special U.S. inspector general.

Turn Right for Japan... route

Turn Right for Japan... route This is an ongoing blog of a man cycling his way from England to Japan. Below is a segment from him leaving Budapest. Insane! 10 Apr, Tue: Said goodbye to the lovely old lady who had taken me in and spent 2 hours getting out of Budapest. I wasn't lost - I knew where I was going - but with foot-high curbs, murderously fast traffic and incredible pot-holes, that's what it took to travel only 15km. On the city limits I saw a lot of hitch-hikers, strung out along the highway, at regular intervals. Oddly, all were exclusively young good-looking women, dressed uniformly in bright flourescent mini-shirts, tight-tops and with nothing in the way of luggage other than a small handbag. Funny, that ...

Interactive Harp and Tings

Listening to Loreena McKennit. Something I learned at 5:30am today: Red Wolves eat creatures that eat turtle eggs, thus promoting the growth of the turtle population. Decongestant pills taken in the last 72 hours: over 20. Why I am currently wearing knee-hi socks (besides their obvious cuteness factor): to hide the gazillion mosquito bites I got Saturday night. Grr. Grrrr!!! Latest reasons why I love my husband: he brought me hot food, strawberry milkshake and a humidifier at 11pm last night.

Politics in Churches

CITIZEN-TIMES.com: Members say church ousts Kerry supporters I found this link off of Pesky Apostrophe's site. I wouldn't be surprised to see an emergance of Politcal Churches. It’s not clear whether the church’s tax-exempt status could be jeopardized. The Internal Revenue Service exempts certain organizations from taxation including those organized and operated for religious purposes, provided that they do not engage in certain activities including involvement in “any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office.” Valerie Thornton, a spokeswoman for the Internal Revenue Service, said she could not comment on the East Waynesville situation, but said “in general if a church engages in partisan politics, it could put their tax-exempt status in jeopardy.” Pastor Robert Prince III of First Baptist Church of Waynesville said he was appalled to hear about the claims but noticed a lot of Southern Baptist ministers endorsing President Bush in November’s election. “One rule has been to speak to issues but not to endorse particular candidates,” he said. “It’s a disturbing development that Baptist pastors are crossing this line and are endorsing specific candidates.”

Husband: Glenn. Who's this? Caller: This is Nancy. Caller: This number is on the back of a pick-up truck. Husband: Oh? Caller: It said, for a good time, call. So I did. Husband: ... *Hangs Up* *Phone rings a second time* *Husband resumes playing Anarchy Online* *Phone not answered* - Next Morning - Wife looks for cell phone to wish mother a happy Mother's Day. Wife: Have you seen my cell phone? Husband: Oh yeah... *Hands phone off of desk* Husband: You got a call last night. Wife: Oh? Husband: Apparently your number was written on the back of a pick-up truck and said "for a good time call." Wife: A good time? Why not a great time? or a magnificent time?! Husband: I don't know.

Won't Hang Up On My Mom!

Where's My Chocolate Fountain?

Ew...that could be a bad movie title. Anyway, I have just discovered chocolate fountains. I thought that they were a creature of myth. Like cookie trees.

Horoscope

Wow...this really describes what I have been going through lately. Good advice though. :D You've just broken out of a deep, dark shell. It wasn't easy, but now that you've decided to stay out here in the sunshine, you won't take kindly to anyone who tries to drive you back. That goes double for anyone who attempts to guilt you into feeling bad about something you know you had absolutely nothing to do with. Talk to the manipulator and straighten them out. You might be able to reach a compromise, or a cease-fire, at the very least.

Gritty

This Saturday, while my husband is gone, I will be getting down and dirty. Yes! More cleaning. He trusts me so. I guess it’s because of my Diet Cokeishness. (In case you haven’t heard, he has proclaimed that I, like Scott, am the Diet Coke of Evil. Grr! I say. Grrr! Or, as the saying goes: Those who fear the dark have no idea what the light can do.) I will probably throw out a whole bunch of stuff too. Like I said, I have been craving a zen environment lately. I think it is because of the change of season and our cramped apartment cannot hold all of my desires any more. I’ve been busy trying to get the Mother’s Day gifts done and sent. I ended up a week behind. This last weekend at Dragon Crest also managed to erase my internal hard drive. Come Monday morning, I barely remembered anything that I had planned to do for this month. It was a great event. My character ended up with a whole bunch of treasure and cool items. It was also a mind/emotion heavy event. I got to take a trip through my husband’s character’s mind and meet his split personalities. Yeah…that was interesting. I was really proud of my husband though. I think he did an amazing job for the first mod that he wrote himself. This weekend we are babysitting, so I think I might plan a "photo shoot"…although I fear the subject might turn out green. Maybe some cool art projects to take home to his mom? I could introduce him to finger paints. Muahahahahahhah! Yeah, I know I’m asking for trouble. But, I think I might have enough plastic mats to get the job done. And soap. Lots and lots of soap. If all else fails: Chuck E Cheese.

Creative Projects for a Beautiful Day

Make a series of pinwheels and attach them to something that moves. Collect a nice variety of flat stones in the woods (the yak-free kind) and paint them then give them away to friends as pet rocks. Sculpt a garden gnome and name him. Insert catnip into a puzzle box for your cat to play with. Make biscuits for your puppy. Sing to a gold fish while painting his picture with watercolors. (CAUTION: do not use the fish’s water.) Write a letter to a friend and decorate freely with unused Easter stickers, watercolors, and pressed flowers. Mail it on a Tuesday. Take an entire roll of film on one subject. Make doubles. With the second set, make window charms, bookmarks, postcards, magnets, or posters. Leave them in public. Make your own stars. Hang them from a ceiling that needs attention. Use mirror-esque wrapping paper for at least two walls in that room. Replace the stars with snowflakes when you need a little Christmas. Get drawing paper/journal. And a favorite writing utensil. Cue a favorite moody cd/album. Make a room as dark as you can stand it. Let the music guide your pen. Don’t peep until the music has stopped. Frame it. Put it in your bathroom.

Continuing Story for a Beautiful Day

Take a walk Take a walk with a friend Take a walk with a friend in a park Take a walk with a friend in a park and discover a new path Take a walk with a friend in a park and discover a new path with many different colored stones Take a walk with a friend in a park and discover a new path with many different colored stones and dare to collect all of the azul colored ones Take a walk with a friend in a park and discover a new path with many different colored stones and dare to collect all of the azul colored ones only to discover a yak nearby Take a walk with a friend in a park and discover a new path with many different colored stones and dare to collect all of the azul colored ones only to discover a yak nearby and that those are his stones Take a walk with a friend in a park and discover a new path with many different colored stones and dare to collect all of the azul colored ones only to discover a yak nearby and that those are his stones and he wants them back Take a walk with a friend in a park and discover a new path with many different colored stones and dare to collect all of the azul colored ones only to discover a yak nearby and that those are his stones and he wants them back so you confess you are sorry Take a walk with a friend in a park and discover a new path with many different colored stones and dare to collect all of the azul colored ones only to discover a yak nearby and that those are his stones and he wants them back so you confess you are sorry and invite him to afternoon tea Take a walk with a friend in a park and discover a new path with many different colored stones and dare to collect all of the azul colored ones only to discover a yak nearby and that those are his stones and he wants them back so you confess you are sorry and invite him to afternoon tea which he gladly accepts.

Please don't take my leg!!!

When I was little, I remember wanting to be a veterinarian. But then I hastily decided against it because I could never put to sleep anyone's beloved pet. That or doing a serious operation where I knew the animal would be left in pain. I figured by the time I was 82 that I would have a lot of land, littered with animals hobbling around in crutches. It was really hard for me to understand how to let go of the thing you love the most. I still have a hard time with letting go. Spring cleaning every year helps. Especially during "parole" hearings for knicknacks that I continually hold on to for "just another year". It's now my dream to have a zen house when I am 82.

Little Epiphany #462

If most of my favorite albums/songs are covers/soundtracks, then how does that relate to my previous post about people speaking in idioms? Is it too late to add Green Day's "American Idiot"?

Final Exam Traditions

I know off hand of two traditions held by students at separate universities. The first is to take at least a sip of alcohol before finals, otherwise you will flunk them. The other occurs the night before finals start where all of the students gather outside at midnight and scream. What's yours?

If I was...

Sven has a meme running on his blog in which participants choose from a list of potential careers and say what they would do. Sven's answers here. Here's the list: If I could be a scientist... If I could be a farmer... If I could be a musician... If I could be a doctor... If I could be a painter... If I could be a gardener... If I could be a missionary... If I could be a chef... If I could be an architect... If I could be a linguist... If I could be a psychologist... If I could be a librarian... If I could be a lawyer... If I could be an inn-keeper... If I could be an athlete... If I could be a professor... If I could be a writer... If I could be a llama rider... If I could be a bonnie pirate... If I could be an astronaut... If I could be a world famous blogger... If I could be a justice on any one court in the world... If I could be married to any current famous political figure... If I could be a dog trainer... The idea is to fill in your FIVE choices on your blog and then link back to the blog from which you got the quiz in the first place. Here are my five choices: 1. If I could be an architect... ... I would re-design empty military bases for homeless/community housing. Help out the guys on "Myth Busters". I'm sure they'd want me to build an arc at some point. At which point I would need to become a zoologist.... 2. If I could be a bonnie pirate... ... then I would cast off at Key West and grab my friends for crew mates. After we got our act together, I would then charge people to be our "guests" and make money off of yuppies by letting them act as real pirates, but they would all have to start off as scrubbing the deck. No one would make it to first mate.... 3. If I could be an inn-keeper... ... my guests would no of no better art of relaxation. And I would have a place to subject the world to my cooking and baking. There would also be karaoke night. And costumes. Heheeh.... 4. If I could be a librarian... ...I would have enough money to fund the ocean dig for the lost library of Alexandria. Employ hundreds of scientists and historians to restore items thought forever lost. Then, there would be a time machine. Please read: To Say Nothing of the Dog.... 5. If I could be a musician... ...I would be the greatest cover-artist in the world.

Another Epiphany, Another Idiom

I’ve been trying to focus more on my writing lately; for some reason communication was always hard for me unless it was through allusive poems. Kinda like Joss Whedon one-liners. I want to write about little epiphanies. You know you have them every day. Something new yet familiar is always being thrown at you, but 12 hours later you can’t remember for the life of you what it was. A piece of conversation overheard at Wal-mart while waiting for your pictures to develop. Or witnessing some atrocious act of driving while winding your way through the morning traffic. Yet, when I sit down to write I still cannot be serious without throwing in some random quote. Does that mean that we avoid the original or the intimate and always rely on social idioms to get us through the day? Maybe there is a way to make resolutions very month, but how can you keep a daily reminder of what you have learned and what you need to stop doing?

5 x 5 x 5

Anyone remember Faith? Today is May 5, 2005. The days are fleeting and here is your chance to do something special on the day o' 5's!!! Five extra kisses and hugs. Go out in groups of fives or eat five of your favorite treat. "Kingdom of Heaven" comes out today, and for the Brits, a day of possible change and new hope. It is also the Holocaust Remembrance Day and Cinco de Mayo. Give thanks for today, and may you remember every day.

Is It Friday Yet?

I'm surprised I didn't get Catwoman. I must be in a somber mood.
Which Tim Burton character are you?

Faith Groups Observe "World Day of Prayer to End Homophobia" on May 29th

wfn.org | Faith Groups Observe "World Day of Prayer to End Homophobia" on May The international observance is organized by Metropolitan Community Churches (MCC), the world's largest faith group with a primary, affirming ministry to gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender (LGBT) persons. "Too often homophobia has been rooted in religious intolerance," said veteran human rights activist Reverend Dr. Troy D. Perry, Moderator of the MCC denomination. "Discrimination against any of God's children is wrong." According to Perry, "Homophobia distorts the spiritual message of God's love for all people."

You Wanna See Something Really Scary?

I’ve been having a lot of thoughts lately about music. Reflecting on where I was when I heard Madonna’s “Playground” and how it just made me cry until everything was still. Or that silly song “Jump” by CrissCross and how it will jerk me back to the eighth grade when all of the good little Catholic boys and girls were learning to become ganstas. How I still don’t know what OPP means. “C’mon boy, take a walk on the wild side” and though the “reflections of my mind” will never scare me as much as the “Midnight Special” thanks to Dan Aykroyd and Albert Brooks in ‘Twilight Zone: The Movie’. When I was younger I was an outcast for listening to Mamas and the Papas, Beach Boys, and the Carpenters. I also had a weird fascination for imitating the dance moves from ‘Thriller’ but was never brave enough to show off in front of my friends. I have always felt more comfortable listening to the Supremes than I have listening to Sublime. Opening credits to ‘China Beach’ still brings an uncontrollable shiver over me. I don’t know what it is about the music. The higher state of consciousness that it brings us to. The music feels for us and it’s a natural rush letting it flow through our blood, carrying all of the fear and aggression and replacing it with a calm adrenaline rush. It’s the thrill that keeps our hope alive.

Thanks Sven

Thank you to Sven for starting the Album thing! I had asked him about bands and what not, and now he has started a blog discussion about what your favorite albums are. See his post here. To see Sven's excellent music preferences, go here. Sadly, it's hard for me to choose favorites, so I'll just have to do a bunch of bands/albums: Flaming Lips: you will need a pair of roller skates, a beautiful summer day and a lunch date with a friend. 'Yoshimi' songs were perfect! I never thought that I could love a purely instrumental song so much before in my life. Outside of 'Green Onions.' Shrek Soundtrack: This album introduced me to the wonderful art of Rufus Wainwright. His 'Aleujah' will make you cry with a torrent of emotion that cannot be stopped. The rest of the songs are good to bounce around too. Tori Amos "Little Earthquakes" - Listen during the Winter. Wear a warm sweater and curl up in front of a fire with a warm cup of coco or tea. Have family photo albums nearby. Possibly a diary. It reminds me of the first year I moved down to Arkansas and I felt very much alone and was really missing my friends. Norah Jones "Come Away With Me" - Best when listened to under the stars, or lying on your bed with the lights off. Might require headphones. This is definitely the music I listen to when I need to do some heavy soul reflecting. Buffy "Once More With Feeling" episode soundtrack - If you love the show, then you will love to sing about it. The best part of all is the inside of the cover where Joss Whedon wrote a quick summary about why he wanted to do a musical. Here is the last little paragraph: "That's about it. I wrote musical. This is the soundtrack. Very occasionally, if you really pay attention, life doesn't suck." Matrix Soundtracks - put them on an MP3 player. Have earpiece headphones on while wearing a leather trench coat. Play while on a train/bus/public setting. Just stand there. And smile. System of a Down: Very good bouncing songs. Very good stormingmandranting songs too. Songs that make no sense or are a tribute to other things are also wonderful, just like their tribute to Legend of Zelda song 'Link'. "Link! He come to town! Come to save the princess Zelda!" Purple Rain: it's Prince. And...it's Prince. Best listened to w/ 80's style headphones, dancnig around in your room with the door closed. Hedwig and the Angry Inch Soundtrack: Although I was never a music major, I love to think of this album as a tribute to rock music. If you appreciate music and lyrics then you need this album. 'Weird' Al Yankovich's POODLE HAT: A Complicated Song...Ebay...Angry White Boy Polka...Couch Potato...Hardware Store...Wanna B Ur Lover...and the ultimate Ode to a Superhero. If it had 'The Saga Begins' and 'Yoda' then it would be perfect. He is not afraid to have fun and that is what is so great. I highly recommend singing to this album while driving in your car in heavy city traffic, it will definitely help you move things along. Pirates of Penzance - Movie Soundtrack: A parody movie. Pirates acting goofy. Fabulous tongue twisters and an array of vocals heights ('O Wandering One'). The best way to 'listen' to this movie is sitting on the floor in front of the tv while watching this movie on VHS (hard to find) and singing/screeching along with it. *Please make sure any PoP non-likers are out of the house. Moulin Rouge - You want a variety of songs, then here you have it. The best way to listen to this is by wearing a red dress in the park and have the music cranked up on a boom box next to you. Must enact w/ a trusted friend. *Will need more for 'Spectacular Spectacular.' Rocky Horror Picture Show - It is impossible to drive while listening to this album w/ out getting into a car wreck. So please, pull over and sing obnoxiously loud on the side of the road. If someone comes over to assist you, then simply throw toast at them and yell 'Boring!!!'
